Musical Influence and its Reflection in the Literature of Ion Luca Caragiale

Abstract

The present work aims to analyze and compare the stages through which the playwright Ion Luca Caragiale strengthens his musical culture when he decides to move with his family to Berlin (the capital, which offers multiple cultural opportunities, with a particular emphasis on music). This overview is based on the analysis of the correspondence between I. L. Caragiale and Paul Zarifopol and the anthology by Ștefan Cazimir, Amintiri despre Caragiale. Through these sources, I will demonstrate the influence of music on the playwright and highlight similarities between musical concepts and the ideas he expressed. Additionally, the testimonies of his friends are significant in revealing the lesser-known side of his love for music, offering an almost complete perspective on his musical passion and its impact. Music plays a crucial role in literature, contributing to the creation of atmosphere and deepening narrative understanding. In literary works, music can be used to intensify the characters’ emotions, symbolize central themes, or reflect various moods. A transdisciplinary approach, blending literature and music, opens new perspectives for analysis and interpretation, allowing for a deeper exploration of texts. Through this method, researchers can examine how rhythm, harmony, and melody influence the structure and literary style. Moreover, music can serve as a bridge between different arts, facilitating a holistic understanding of a work. Thus, integrating music into the study of literature not only enriches the aesthetic experience but also provides new tools for critical analysis, highlighting the complexity and interconnectedness between the arts.
