Responsible AI Integration Framework for Psychotherapy
Abstract
The article explores the opportunities and risks associated with the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into psychotherapy. AI can expand access to care, provide clinical decision support, enable continuous monitoring, and increase system efficiency. At the same time, significant challenges remain, including technological immaturity, data privacy and ethical concerns, and the potential erosion of the therapeutic alliance. To ensure safe and responsible adoption, the article introduces the Responsible AI Integration Framework for Psychotherapy, which identifies four essential capabilities: Explainable AI (XAI), Shared Decision Making (SDM), Electronic Health Record (EHR) integration, and Harm Prevention (HP). Together, these components form a practical, workflow-embedded formula that addresses both technical and ethical requirements. A roadmap for implementation is also proposed, emphasizing phased adoption within public health systems through preparation and vision, controlled pilots, gradual scaling, and full integration with ongoing improvement. The framework underscores that AI should function as a supportive tool, enhancing rather than replacing the empathic human presence that remains central to psychotherapy.
