Challenge of Aesthetic's Toll: A Review of Biosemiotics Perspective
Abstract
The concept of beauty has been analysed from various perspectives, including biosemiotics, cultural standards, media influence, historical contexts, and philosophical theories. While some studies emphasise the subjective nature of beauty as a cognitive construct or product of cultural and media influences, others point to the possibility of objective standards such as symmetry and proportion, which may underlie our perceptions of beauty. This study aims to explore the concept of beauty from multidisciplinary perspectives, highlighting the complexity and multidimensionality of aesthetic experiences. Beauty is a fundamental aspect of human life that influences behaviour and societal expectations. Cultural standards of beauty are complex constructs influenced by a variety of sociocultural and digital factors. To comprehensively understand the cultural standards of beauty, it is essential to examine the interplay of these factors and their influence on perceptions of beauty. These standards are not static and can vary significantly across different cultural and ethnic backgrounds, as well as between genders and age groups. The social impact of beauty standards, including their role in advertising and their potential to break these standards, is a significant area of discussion. Social media platforms are widely recognised as powerful influencers in shaping beauty ideals, often promoting unattainable standards. These platforms not only distribute but also create beauty trends, with content creators playing a crucial role in their dissemination. Further research is needed to investigate the psychological and emotional alterations in patients who remain perpetually dissatisfied with their physical appearance, regardless of the number of aesthetic interventions they undergo.
